Global Moxie

Named in honor of Dolly the cloned sheep, the Big Medium 2.0b45 beta update is a festival of facsimile, a carnival of carbon-copying.

This version adds “copy” and “copy to site” features to Big Medium’s edit menu, allowing you to clone existing pages, announcements and tips to any site in the system. Plus, the new “change section” feature lets you shepherd multiple pages to new site sections with a single click.

If you’re updating from a previous version... This update contains JavaScript updates that may not take effect until you clear your browser cache. After you install the update, please have all of your organization’s editors follow the browser update instructions.

The download package includes complete installation instructions, including info for upgrading from previous versions of the Big Medium 2 beta. Shortcut instructions for upgrading from 2.0b41 or later are provided below. (If you’re upgrading from versions earlier than 2.0b41, please follow the instructions in the download package’s installation guide.)

Here’s what’s new in this update:

Features and changes

• The new “Copy” button in the edit menu toolbar clones one or more pages, announcements or tips, creating a new, unpublished version at the same site.

• The new “Copy to site” button in the edit menu toolbar copies one or more pages, announcements or tips to other sites in your Big Medium installation, including associated library items.

• The new “Change section” button in the edit menu toolbar lets you reassign one or more pages, announcements or tips to new site sections.

• The “Change status” button in the edit menu toolbar now lets you change not only publication status but also the owner and priority of content items. (This feature is available only to accounts with editor privileges or better).

• The edit screen for individual content items now has an owner field that allows accounts with editor privileges or better to change the item’s owner.

• The edit menu now displays only 30 items per page for faster loading.

• Visitor comments are now numbered (the number is displayed in place of the “#” character that accompanied each link).

• Minor speed improvements for content deletion.

• The news feed auto-discovery links for section pages now link directly to the section-specific feed (if it’s enabled). All other pages continue to link to the full feed.

Bug fixes

• Pages that change status via the auto-publish or auto-unpublish feature now properly send e-mail alerts to accounts subscribed to status changes.

• Fixed html error in the comment display (missing </span> tag in the count caption)

• Fixed bug in library edit screen that caused the edit menu screen to be duplicated on the page when a form validation error is encountered.

• Fixed dumb HTML-escaping error in edit menu for pages with quotes in the description.

• Fixed bug that gave the site’s background-image CSS an incorrectly formatted value for imported sites without a background image.

• Fixed bug that could break alphabetized order of sites in the e-mail alert panel of the account edit screen.

Upgrading from 2.0b41, b42, b43 or b44?

If you’re upgrading from v2.0b41 or later, you can update to the new version by following the instructions below:

1. Set your FTP client to “plain text” or “ASCII” mode.

2. Upload files to moxiebin/Modules

Upload these files to the moxiebin/Modules directory, replacing the old files of the same names:

• BigMed.pm
• BigMed (directory and all contents)

3. Upload files to moxiedata/templates/cp_templates

Upload these files to the moxiedata/templates/cp_templates directory:

• screen_editor_copyxsite.tmpl
• screen_editor_menu.tmpl

4. Upload files to moxiedata/templates/site_templates/HTML

Upload these files to the moxiedata/templates/site_templates/HTML directory. replacing the old files of the same name:

• wi_comments_guts.tmpl
• wi_comments_include.tmpl

5. Upload css and js files to bmadmin

Upload these files to the bmadmin directory:

• css (directory and all contents)
• js (directory and all contents)

6. Set your FTP client to “binary” or “automatic” mode.

7. Upload files to bmadmin/img

Upload these files to the bmadmin/img directory:

• bmcp_change_sec.gif
• bmcp_copy.gif
• bmcp_xsitecopy.gif

8. Run the updater

Browse to the bm-update.cgi file in your site’s moxiebin directory. For example:

http://www.example.com/cgi-bin/moxiebin/bm-update.cgi

9. Ask editors to clear browser cache

Please ask all of your site’s Big Medium editors to follow the browser update instructions.
