Big Medium 2.0b9: "Woe Is IE"
Posted Sep 1, 2006
Today's "Woe is IE" beta update fixes an assortment of Internet Explorer
rendering bugs (ugh, don't get me started on that browser), plus some
rich-text editor issues and a few problems for servers running Perl 5.6.x.
Download the latest version of Big Medium here.
A Note About Theme Changes
This update provides some fixes to the base Big Medium styles and the
"Cup o' Joe" theme. Sites using the "Cup o' Joe" theme should follow these
steps after installing this update:
- Go to "Layout>New Theme" in the Big Medium control panel.
- Click "Apply" under the "Cup o' Joe" theme.
- Repeat these steps for all sites using the "Cup o' Joe" theme:
Click "Switch sites" in the left-column menu, choose the next
site, and repeat steps one and two above.
Be aware hat this process will also remove any custom templates or
style sheet customizations you may have added.
The New Files
If you're upgrading from v2.0b8, you can upgrade by uploading only the
following files and directories listed below.
When uploading, make sure that your FTP client is set to "plain text" or
"ASCII" mode when you upload the files).

The Nitty Gritty
Here's what's new in this update:
- Fixed a problem in the "cup o' joe" theme in Internet Explorer 6 that caused
pullquotes, images and dropdown menus on the homepage to be obscured by the
blue-mesh background. ...mutters under breath about
Internet Explorer...
- Fixed a problem in Internet Explorer (...more
muttering...) that caused floated elements (images, pullquotes, etc)
to extend beyond their containing element (e.g., links and content text).
- Fixed a crashing bug in some versions of Perl 5.6 when Big Medium tries to
delete a directory (as when a new theme is applied). The fix is in the form
of the current version of File::Path, now included in Big Medium's module
bundle.
- Fixed an issue in Perl 5.6.1 that prevented text after the first paragraph
not to appear when Big Medium built pages.
- Fixed an intermittent bug that caused embedded items like pullquotes or
images to be displayed one paragraph higher than specified.
- Author blurb box is no longer displayed when no blurb is provided.
- Smoothed the loading of tabbed fields to eliminate brief appearance of
hidden fields when the page is loading.
- Added web infrastructure to allow Big Medium to access the Web and talk
to other servers.
- Various optimizations and random acts of hygiene.
