Big Medium 2.0b17: "Faithful Manservant"

Posted Sep 1, 2006

The "Faithful Manservant" update is all about catering to your personal preferences, with the addition of lots of new settings that let you nudge and cajole your site into precisely the format you want. To pamper you to the proper degree, nearly all preferences can be customized right down to the subsection level.

And because every stalwart valet disdains any misstep, this update includes a fistful of bug fixes, too.

Download the latest version of Big Medium here.

The Nitty Gritty

New features:

  • Added "Section properties" preference pages where webmasters and administrators can set section-specific HTML display preferences and edit a variety of section properties, including:
    • Whether section is active (published to the live site).
    • Navigation title
    • Section page headline
    • Slug name
    • Alternate/alias URL to point the section's navigation link to a custom URL.
  • Added "Site properties" preferences page where webmasters and administrators can edit the site's name, time zone, time/date formats and upload limit.
  • Added "File Upload Limits" preferences page where administrators can set the maximum size of file uploads and the filetypes allowed for upload.
  • Added a "Rebuild All Pages" option to the Layout menu to give one-click access to rebuilding all pages of the site.
  • Added a checkbox to the main edit menu that allows you to toggle all checkboxes at once.
  • Added instructions to RSS feeds to tell search engines whether or not to index the RSS using Bloglines' new proposed Feed Access Control specification.
  • Added some additional document icons for display with document attachments and fixed a CSS bug that prevented display of MS Project and PowerPoint icons.

Bug fixes:

  • Fixed crashing bug when editing homepage or section page previously edited by a different user account. (Thanks to Steve Carter.)
  • Dropdown menus in both the Big Medium control panel and generated sites are no longer obscured by select fields in Internet Explorer.
  • The "open links in new windows" HTML preference is now properly honored for links created in Big Medium's rich-text edit fields.
  • <%htmlhead%> widget now properly honors search engine robot settings.
  • Preview pages now display latest links, tips, announcements and a handful of other widgets that were not previously getting displayed.
  • Several fixes for bugs in the sort-order and link-elements preference settings:
    • Fixed bug that created a shadow sort-order preference even when the "Customize for this widget" checkbox indicates that you don't want to save a sort-order preference.
    • When re-displaying the form with an error message, the form now remembers your entry for sort-order and link-elements HTML preferences.
    • Fixed bug that ignored the value in the last menu of the sort-order and link-elements preferences fields.
    • The sort-order field now ignores multiple entries of the same value.
  • Fixed bug in <%url%> widget which could return a URL for a section other than the current one when viewing a page assigned to multiple sections.
  • Section-specific page build requests now build all subsections and parents of the requested section.
